India Launches e-Passports: Key Information for Travellers

Share

In a move to enhance security and streamline identification processes, India has officially begun issuing e-passports across select cities. These modernised passports blend traditional design with advanced electronic features, representing a major leap in the country’s travel documentation system.

The introduction of e-passports is a flagship component of the Passport Seva Programme (PSP) Version 2.0. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the rollout commenced on April 1, 2024.

What Are e-Passports?

e-Passports are next-generation travel documents equipped with an embedded chip and a built-in antenna, discreetly housed within the front cover. These elements enable the secure storage of both personal and biometric data.

One of the defining features of the new e-passport is a gold-colored symbol on the cover, signifying its electronic capabilities. The system relies on Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) to authenticate the chip’s data, protect it from tampering, and maintain its integrity—making identity fraud significantly more difficult.

Key Advantages of e-Passports

  • Enhanced Data Security: Personal information and biometric details are securely encrypted and stored in the chip.
  • Protection Against Forgery: The design makes it much harder to clone or alter the document.
  • Faster Verification: Immigration processes are expected to become more efficient with electronic validation.
  • Improved Travel Experience: e-Passports support global standards, helping to streamline border control across international checkpoints.
