Swiggy’s Annual Report: India Orders 158 Biryanis Per Minute in 2024

Biryani has retained its crown as India’s most beloved dish for the ninth year in a row, with an astonishing 83 million orders recorded in 2024, according to Swiggy’s latest food ordering trends report. This equates to an average of 158 biryanis every minute or about two every second!

Chicken biryani led the way with 49 million plates devoured across the country. Hyderabad emerged as the biryani capital, recording 9.7 million plates ordered. Bengaluru and Chennai followed, clocking in 7.7 million and 4.6 million orders, respectively. Mutton biryani also made a strong showing, with Hyderabad contributing 2.2 million orders to its tally.

Swiggy revealed that 2.8 million first-time users opted for biryani as their inaugural order on the platform.

Breakfast Favorites and Regional Preferences

Dosa retained its status as a breakfast favorite, with 23 million orders logged throughout the year. Of these, 8.5 million dosas and 7.8 million idlis were delivered as morning staples. Bengaluru stood out, consuming 2.5 million masala dosas, while Delhi, Chandigarh, and Kolkata preferred regional delights like chole, aloo parantha, and kachoris, respectively.

Pasta Enthusiast Sets Spending Record

A Bengaluru-based customer stood out by spending ₹49,900 on pasta alone, indulging in 55 Alfredo dishes, 40 mac and cheese plates, and 30 servings of spaghetti.

Dinner Dominates Meal Times

Dinner was the most popular meal on Swiggy in 2024, accounting for 215 million orders—nearly 29% more than lunchtime orders.

Swiggy’s delivery partners collectively covered a staggering 1.96 billion kilometers this year. Among them, Mumbai’s Kapil Kumar Pandey set a record with 10,703 deliveries, while Kaleeswari M from Coimbatore became the top-performing female delivery partner with 6,658 orders.

Lightning-Fast Deliveries and Snack Preferences

Swiggy’s 10-minute delivery service, Bolt, achieved record-breaking delivery times, with burgers, cakes, and ice creams arriving in as little as three minutes in cities like Nashik, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Delhi.

The chicken roll emerged as the most ordered snack nationwide, with 2.48 million orders. Chicken momos (1.63 million) and potato fries (1.3 million) followed closely behind. Late-night cravings were dominated by chicken burgers, with 1.84 million orders placed between midnight and 2 a.m. In one memorable instance, a Delhi customer ordered 250 onion pizzas in a single go.

Dessert Delights

Choco lava cake reigned supreme as the dessert of choice, with 3.6 million orders. Chocolate truffle cake followed, with 2.27 million plates enjoyed across the country.

Dining Out and Big Spenders

Swiggy Dineout also had a banner year, seating 22 million diners who collectively saved ₹533 crore through table reservations and deals. Hourly reservations surged from 337 to 1,242, with Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Pune leading the trend. Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Lucknow, and Indore were also significant contributors.

One Mumbai diner made headlines by spending ₹3 lakh on a single restaurant order. Meanwhile, Kanchipuram recorded the highest average transaction value at ₹4,284, followed by Shillong at ₹3,678 and Siliguri at ₹2,747.

Swiggy’s 2024 report paints a vivid picture of India’s love for food, showcasing everything from biryani obsessions to record-breaking indulgences.
