To alleviate persistent traffic issues in Hinjewadi, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has announced an ambitious infrastructure upgrade, including a flyover and road-widening projects worth ₹650 crore.
A significant part of this plan is a 720-metre, four-lane flyover at Laxmi Chowk, one of Hinjewadi’s most congested intersections. This ₹40-crore project aims to resolve bottlenecks in this critical area, which serves as a key route for IT professionals and commuters.
The initiative also includes expanding the existing six-lane road between Shivaji Chowk and Smashan Bhumi Chowk, covering a distance of 900 metres. This road-widening project is estimated to cost ₹25 crore and will improve traffic flow in a crucial stretch of the locality.
An additional proposal involves constructing a new 5-kilometre road linking Phase One and Phase Three within the IT Park, estimated at ₹584.14 crore. Land acquisition for these projects will be managed by the Public Works Department (PWD), with MIDC responsible for project execution.
Reviving the Baner-IT Park Road
Another pivotal development involves completing the long-stalled six-lane road connecting Baner and the IT Park. Out of its 5.75-kilometre length, 2.5 kilometres have already been finished. This project, also known as the New Alternate Road, spans areas under the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).
Shankar Salkar from the Hinjewadi Industrial Association (HIA) expressed optimism about the progress, emphasizing the importance of the Town Planning (TP) scheme’s approval by PMRDA to advance the work. PMC will oversee the acquisition of an initial 300-metre stretch, with PMRDA handling subsequent segments.
Addressing Long-Term Traffic Concerns
These upgrades are part of MIDC’s comprehensive strategy to tackle Hinjewadi’s chronic traffic problems, particularly at peak hours. The proposed projects are expected to streamline commutes, reduce travel time, and enhance the overall connectivity of the IT hub with Pune and other regions.
With detailed planning, multi-agency coordination, and significant investment, MIDC aims to transform Hinjewadi’s infrastructure, ensuring smoother traffic management and improved accessibility for residents and professionals alike.
