Delhi Airport Travel Alert: Flight Disruptions Between January 19-26 – Key Details You Need to Know

Share

Delhi Airport operator DIAL (Delhi International Airport Limited) has issued a travel advisory for passengers flying in and out of Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) between January 19 and January 26, 2025. Due to Republic Day week activities, there will be a significant disruption in flight operations during these dates.

Key Flight Operation Changes: From January 19 to January 26, there will be no flight arrivals or departures between 10:20 am and 12:45 pm IST. The restriction is implemented to ensure the safety and security of dignitaries and aircraft involved in the Republic Day flypast.

Indira Gandhi International Airport, the busiest airport in India, processes approximately 1,300 flight movements each day. As a result, this airspace closure will have widespread implications for both domestic and international flights. While specific details on how each airline will adjust are still forthcoming, passengers are advised to stay in contact with their airlines for the latest flight updates.

Impact on Flights:

  • January 19 (Sunday): 85 departures and 85 arrivals affected.
  • January 20 (Monday): 85 departures and 84 arrivals impacted.
  • January 21 (Tuesday): 79 departures and 81 arrivals disrupted, marking the least affected day of the period.
  • January 22–26 (Wednesday to Saturday): Daily disruptions will affect between 81 and 84 departures, and 82 to 87 arrivals.

International Flights Impacted: This flight disruption will also impact international travel. Flights to key global destinations like Toronto, Washington D.C., Tashkent, Kathmandu, and Colombo will experience delays and cancellations due to the restricted airspace. The closure is expected to last for nearly three hours each day during this period, which will significantly affect flights to and from the Delhi hub.

The Reason Behind the Restrictions: The restricted flight window is necessary for ensuring that the Republic Day celebrations, which involve dignitaries and special flypasts, proceed smoothly. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has been confirmed as the chief guest for the Republic Day event this year, adding to the heightened security measures around the airport and its airspace during this period.

Important Advice for Passengers:

  • Stay Updated: Passengers are strongly encouraged to check with their airlines for real-time updates and changes to their flight schedules. The disruptions are expected to have a ripple effect on connecting flights as well.
  • Flight Rescheduling: Many airlines are likely to offer rescheduling options or alternative flight arrangements to minimize passenger inconvenience.
  • Extra Time: With significant disruptions expected during peak travel times, travelers should allocate additional time for airport security checks and possible delays.

As this period of heightened security and planned airspace closure approaches, DIAL is ensuring that measures are in place to facilitate smooth operations once normal flight schedules resume. Passengers are urged to remain patient and plan ahead to avoid potential travel delays.
